Analysis paralysis! OM-3, Sony a6700, Fuji xt50 and x100vi
Main Post:
- Budget: AU2500
- Country: Australia
- Condition: Any
- Type of Camera: compact
- Intended use: Mostly photo limited video
- If photography; what style: travel, Kiteboarding, kids, landscape
- If video what style:
- What features do you absolutely need: good AF, IBIS, compact
- What features would be nice to have: articulating screen, optical Viewfinder, astro, macro, weather sealed, good battery
- Portability: compact for pack carry hiking
- Cameras you're considering: OM-3, Sony a6700, Fuji xt50 & x100vi
- Cameras you already have: Canon 20D
- Notes: The Sony felt better in hand but the fuji was far more inviting to play with all the dials easily accessible. x100vi in there as an easy grab and go option. I need robust and compact for travel/hiking, but overall something that makes me reach for it instead of my phone. I don't like post processing. I'm overwhelmed! Lens suggestions also welcome. Thanks
Top Comment: The OM-3 like the OM-5 is.. "weird", but if you're into that, it might be for you. It is a camera that really is limitless on potential opportunities, cause if you stumble on one someday or want to do something once, the OM-3 is there. The OM-3 inherits the bigger battery from the OM-1, so it is ahead of the pack here, with the A6700 just barely behind. Some stuff like the stacked sensor (excellent against electronic shutter distortion) or the crazy fps (sadly the mechanical is just 6fps) doesn't make sense at all for the class it is in- but it's there for you... for when you want to randomly do AF-C 50FPS or AF-S at 120FPS- and this is RAW. While it does have retro inspired aesthetics, unlike the Fuji, the operations of the camera feel closer of that to Sony. To get the elephant out of the room, yes, the smaller sensor does have some penalties in a bit less dynamic range at low ISO and it is more noisier than the APSC cameras at higher ISOs. But go look at DPreview's image comparison tool- you'll be surprised how close they are. You can check Photons To Photos to compare dynamic range and you'll see unless you're exclusively at base ISO all the time, you'll be getting similar performance at other ISOs. Note the OM-3 is really that new, so you won't see any grips or aftermarket ones right now. On that ergonomic part it will be pretty bad if you're going to use heavier lenses. Out of all those, the OM-3 continues Olympus long line of great weather resistance. They just added what fans have been asking as well, weather resistant compact 17mm and 25mm lenses cause not everyone needs the f/1.4 or f/1.2 versions. With the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8, you can really honestly do anything and the weather conditions won't stop you. It has better than average 0.3x magnification too. When it comes to macro, there are two lenses you might be interested in, the 30mm and 60mm. Both are optically excellent, you'll find people in particular keeping a M4/3 body to just keep using the 60mm macro. One of the things we cannot ignore which other companies don't have is the computational features for stills. There is handheld high res for 50MP RAWs, going to 80MP if you use a tripod. You have Live ND, which basically simulates an ND filter in camera up to 6 stops. On top of this, there's now Live Grad ND and as the name suggests, simulates a graduated filter with up to 3 stops. These features are nice if you do not want to not carry ND filters around with you, and you want to get say streaky waterfalls or you're trying to balance out the sky with mountains and forest scenery. My other favourites is Live Composite and Bulb. Both show in real time how the image is looking right now, but Composite only adds brightness changes and reduces blown out details. When it comes to "standard" JPEG output, Olympus also has had great colour science here for a very long time. If you just want straight of camera good pictures, it will deliver. B&W is really great as well. If you're feeling adventurous, you can customize 12 different colour values individually, including shadows, midtone, and highlights to your liking. Ontop of this you can adjust the graduation function (basically a tone curve) if you want to impart a low key, high key, a normal balance, or the default auto setting. The OM-3 does have a star sky AF feature which automates the process of trying to focus on stars- rather you switching to manual and punching it to get them in focus. As for "negatives"? Honestly... not a lot of third party glass autofocus wise for M4/3 compared to Sony E or Fuji X. That said, all the common and even some niche focal lengths are pretty much covered. You won't find yourself lacking a lens for a focal length, but you might be envious of others getting lenses that will not come to you. As for autofocus, for human subjects the A6700 will be a bit more stickier- their human subject detection is almost creepy excellent. Fuji is not the best here. Another one I can think of is that if you want "fun" and "different" looks, Fuji is great here. Olympus gatekept some of the more niche features of their JPEG customization to a few bodies, so finding cool JPEG settings online isn't that popular- but it is out there. If there's one thing i'll have to say, the X100 series is not worth it unless you're 100% sure this is what you want (cause you're stuck with that lens). Outside the unique OVF and EVF experience, the hardware that makes the images can be found on much cheaper bodies and the pictures will look the same.
